How brackish are they really? Could they live in fresh water for, say, a year and a half, then switch to brackish? As one inch (or smaller) babies, would they beat up my two baby bullhead cats (about 2 in. each) or my baby American eel (about 8 inches)? Could they live in mildly brackish water for about a year? They're pretty bulletproof fish and I figure eels come from the ocean anyway... Or, could they live with these guys for a year or two in fresh, then the puffers alone in brackish? I plan on giving the others to an exhibit at the nature center I work at when I go to college so I could get puffers, but I came across a pair of super-healthy one inchers today and I just gotta have 'em!

I know just about everything else about these guys, I think I'll be good to go if the answers to these questions work out :)

Also, name suggestions? They gotta be cute :D

Thank you!

they are VERY brackish, full marine eventually. i wouldnt suggest keeping them in fresh any longer than needed as they fully thrive in brackish/marine conditions you will just stress the ish out of them and possibly kill them. i had mine in freshwater for about 2 months then started slowly acclimating them to brackish, and now i have had them for about 6 months and they are fully salt. i think i acclimated them slowly enough even my figure 8's are doing really well in the fully salt.

You will need FULL MARINE conditions for them to live a full healthy life. They typically DON'T do well with tank mates. I have two that are 5yo and will only tolerate the chocolate chip starfish thats in the tank.

There is a method I read that sounded very sound. I dont remember the exact measurements, but I think at 1 inch & under they should be fresh water, then go brackish at 1.5 inch to 2 inches, then full marine after that? Somebody please let me know if those #'s arent correct. I'm also gonna try to find the article so I can correct myself...

Actually high-end BW for life is fine but why not go full marine, so you can add live rock & a protein skimmer for le$$ water changes?

I picked up a couple gsp's from walmart last year and took them to full brackish in a 20g tank. they were definetly fun but alot more work than any of the other fish I have ever kept. The feeding time is fun but getting thr snails when they are small enough for my 2" gsp's was tough and they'd soon grow to big to feed to them. I kept a few mollies in there with them (mollies do much better in brackish than in freshwater) but eventually i got rid of them as I didn't have the time to take care of them properly.

20g isn't nearly large enough for 1 adult GSP, nevermind 2. Good thing you had the compassion & sense to rehome them.

yeah that was before I had the tanks I do now available and truly I couldn't provide them the proper home at the time. I'm told they are doing well now.

If I ever have the budget for marine, I'll try them again.
