Hey Im planning on building a sump for my 225 and had a couple of questions. The firs one is are there any benefits of haveing a fuge on a FW aquarium? And the second is do you guys have any ideas or plans on the sump? It will be a 55 or 75g tank. Thanks

Uhm a fuge will help break down nitrate. But I'd rather just stuff the sump with bio media.

If you dont have a tank there are cheaper ways to build a sump using Rubbermaid storage containers. I built mine out of a 50G storage container and a 10G container. Less then $30. There are designs all over MFK on different sumps. I think a fuge is a waste of space in a FW sump, just fill it with bio filtration.

I have a 210G set up with a 40G breeder for a sump. I divided about 20G off that for a fuge. Works great. Though I am not a botanical major I believe that plants do more than just absorb nitrAtes and they do that very well. The water in that tank sparkles. Gives me a place to grow cherry shrimp at the same time. My fish enjoy the treats.

A sump set up for just bio is a waste of space in the cabinet. Unless you have a bare bottom tank with no 'scaping you would be better served setting up the sump for mechanical filtration. The BB will find plenty of area in that 225G tank to colonize.

If I were to go back in my design I woulda used a 50G breeder and enlarged the fuge by ten gals.

Be careful with those rubbermaids for storage, they have been known to fail at the stress points. A few posts going on now to do with them failing.
