Hi there I am going to have a sump on my new ray tank, a lot of people say that a sump has to be around 2/3rds the size of the main tank however my plan is to use a current 75 gallon to filter a 240 gallon main tank, will this still work? Obviously ill have less water volume and less space for media but it'll be plenty more than a couple of cannisters can provide surely? Or am I just being silly and should stick with a couple of cannisters?

Secondly heating my tank, the room that its going to be in has an ambient temp of around 18.5C I'd like the tank temp to be around 28C, how many watts of heating would you recommend I use? If I go the route of the sump can I expect a submersible pump to give out some heat and thus reduce the amount of watts required to heat?

Thanks for all your help!

You won't regret the sump. Im using a 75 on my 300 and it works great. It should be even better on yours.

im not the best with heaters living in Florida, but I don't think your sump pumps would provide enough heat to keep you where you want to be. As a brand I like ego-jager/eheim heaters, but they almost never come on for me.

I love sumps for big systems.

A sump doesn't have to be around any size. If you have to go smaller then that is fine. Just be ready to overcompensate with canisters and media.

But bigger is better.

it just needs to be big enough to hold the water that back siphons when you turn your return pump off but at the same time hold the amount of media you want it to hold. sumps are awesome by the way...
