Sorry for the crappy quality. The camera is pretty old. The subject also wouldn't sit still as soon as the lights came on. I'll try again later for some better shots when he's settled in more.

Yeah I'm pretty sure he is too. He was just sold as an "african lungfish." Also given that he hasn't eaten any of his danio tankmates, despite the fact that they swim right up to his face, I'm going to guess that he isn't an annectens ;).

definitely an SAL, and a great looking specimen at that! keep us posted on how he's doing, and feel free to let us know if you have further questions. most SAL get along with other similar sized tankmates (or those that they can't swallow), so you have some options in that area if you want. be sure to include some vegetable matter in its diet (like algae wafers) as well. good luck!--

He's pretty awesome. I'm just trying to figure out how to get him to eat regularly. So far, for the most part he has ignored food, or been scared by it (earthworms). He did eat a few pieces of frozen krill the other day. I'd like to get him settled in and eating well before I get any tankmates. If anyone has any advice or suggestions for getting him to eat regularly, I'd be happy to listen (or read).

he'll be shy at first...you may want to go with a good pellet (like hikari sinking carnivore) or just small pieces of raw shrimp. feed him right before the lights go out on the tank...that way he will come out of hiding to eat and not feel as threatened. you can stick around and watch to see if he's eating at these times. slowly you can change his feeding time to during light hours so you can see him more. this generally works best with newly acquired lungfishes...many of which are shy like this.

start by putting just one or two pellets or one or two small pieces of shrimp...this way you can leave them overnight without worrying about fouling the tank much (if they are uneaten by the next morning, fish them out with a net and then try again the next evening). hope that helps, and let us know how things are going!--

I've gotten him to eat a few pieces of krill every other day so far. I think that he may be picking off the danios at night as well. I'm down 2. They don't really seem to understand that he he's alive and much bigger than they are. When the LF eats, he crunches up his food, spits it part way out and then slowly crunches it back into his mouth, repeating this many times. During this, the danios take the opportunity to pick at the food hanging from his mouth while he's eating. I think they have a death wish.

that's pretty amusing about the danios getting close to pick at the partially processed food.

lungfishes all do this with their food because their digestive system is 'less advanced' or at least not as efficient as many other fishes, animals, so a lot of mechanical processing is done before it enters into their relatively simple digestive tract--
