So I think what I believe to be a pair of jewel cichlids what has led me to believe this is Both have taking on very vibrant colors but my ? starts with this 2 have will chum around and hang out in a hole they have been digging together for day or maybe 2 then all of a sudden one freaks out on other and chases around take for a day or so during which chasee loses vibrant coloring other than this no damage done just some running around then next day or maybe even just several hrs later back to chumming it up is this normal cause has been going on now for about 2 weeks and thought if they were a pair they would have spawn by now but this is my first go round with Jewel cichlids hint the ? of behavoir

I have a theory about what's going on. You have 2 jewels, they start playing and getting friendly. When they're chilling having a good time in their hole they dug, the male put his hand between the females legs and felt a "log"... Males gets super upset that he was tricked by a drag queen and starts chasing the drag queen around the tank trying to kill him. Drag queen slips a roofy into the males drink and takes advantage of him again. They start chillin in the hole again and the roofy wares off! Male starts chasing the drag queen around, pissed off at the world.

Just teasing. Any updates? You should be able to find courting displays of these fish on you tube. Also try a 25% water change and fill with pure cold water.

Lmbo they have since calmed down a lot and only hang together now they don't leave one another side but still no fry have been doing water changes normally I am pretty sure they are a pair as one is very vibrant and the other is not so much both have more color than they did not sure if maybe they are scared to proceed do to them being the smallest fish in my 125 which also house a small breeding pair of convict about 2.5in apiece and a Black belt cichlid that I guessin in approaching 5 but they don't fight much no nip fins on anyone Guess it is just a waiting game
