I want to cover the sides of my tank with that cheap paper background from any pet store, you know the blue/black ones sold by the foot. I want to do this because I want to cover the overflow from site on the side and to concentrate the light in the middle of the tank. Can I do this and make it look good or no?

Don't know how it will look, but you could also just buy a piece of poster board and spray paint it, probably be much cheaper. Personally, if i wanted to block off the sides and back, i would probably use a piece of insulation board and spray paint it black that way it would be easier to keep a constant temp. in the tank. Would save a lot if you have to heat the tank.

You can pay $2 somethin a foot on aquarium background, and have to deal with it bing rolled and not perfectly straight, or you could go to HEB and pickup a piece of black posterboard that's like a buck and tape it on there. It's perfectly flat, and won't be ugly blue on the outside. Use electrical tape on the edges, and trim it on the end.

I have the ends of a couple tanks painted... I really like the effect it has inside the tank... as long as it compliments the tank in the room I highly suggest it...

I agree that roll up backgrouds are a pain and there are several more practical ways to get the same affect...

The tank is in my living room and the sides are visible. I know rolled stuff will not look good. I was thinking of the poster board but I don't know how attractive it will look. I like the idea of the window tint. Could I do that on an acrylic tank? Keep the ideas coming and let's see some pics.

if you want something that looks really clean, but isn't permanent, go to home-depot and get a piece of lexan/plexiglass cut to size and paint it black, or tint it, and put it on the side of the tank. that way it is removable if you ever need to.

I like this idea! I'll post some pics when I figure out what to do. Thanks for all the great ideas.

Oh my god.. I just posted a similar thread like 2 threads above you... how embarrassing. :( Let me know if you know where to get the wallpaper.
