Anybody have any ideas for what to cover the intake of the HOB filter so that the fry don't get sucked up? Some kind of very thin mesh? the suction isn't so strong that they will get stuck to the screen. So what do you guys use? besides sponge filters?

awesome panty hoes are on... moms are good for something i guess

I have to say, a sponge filter is the best option for a fry tank...........Whatever, the suction of any HOB is powerful enough to hold a fry onto the mesh screen, enough to drown it.........SPONG FILTERS......:headbang2

+1 to pantyhose
i got one from charlotte russe, they give them out so u can use em when u try on shoes there. i had nothing better to do so i just took one :P

I've tried both methods, sponge and filter media bags over the intake of my Penguin biowheel filters. I've found that the sponge method, although effective, always required too much rinsing and got clogged more easily. The filter media bags worked much better, only have to rinse every 3 mths to improve water intake. I use these from Drs Foster and Smith on all my breeding cichlid tanks in the 3x4 in size:

I have never seen fry getting caught on them. In fact, I can't keep them away from the intake. They feed off the debris there, even though the current is pretty strong in that area.

a big sponge used to wash cars then cut to size wit a hole in it for the intake works best imo. if not u could use a mesh trap thing used for breeding and put the intake into that
