I bought an old used tank and cleaned it up. The back of it was painted blue and i removed it with a putty knife and some nail polish remover.

I noticed a crack in the trim of the tank today. This could have been there from the start, or caused from the nail polish remover. Either way, should i be concerned? I'm starting to think the nail polish remover got on the silicone and weakened it and freaking myself out.

damn right you should. I just got a 2nd hand 55g and it was cracked. I filled it with water outside and it broke over night. use some acrylic based glue before filling it with water

post a pic if you can. do you mean the plastic trim along the top or bottom? either way they act as braces and i would be concerned.

post some pics so we can get a better idea of what it looks like, and in the future always use a razor blade (carefully) and vinegar to clean a tank.

Sorry for the huge pics, but otherwise you probably couldn't see the crack. Its in the corner of the trim (probably the worse spot right?)

Thanks for any advice. Hopefully i can salvage the tank somehow, but if it's safer to just go out and buy a new 75 gallon from the store, then please tell me to do so.

Since it's in a top corner it's more of an appearance issue than a strength issue. Make sure the area is clean, mask it off with some masking tape, put some epoxy in the crack with a pin, tape the corner tight together, and let it dry. No worries!
