Crack while drilling? Is it still usable?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If the cracks are above water level then it would be fine, just monitor it and make sure no water is leaking and that they aren't getting worse

You can always use a windshield repair kit with some good UV lighting. Might help and it might not. Not a heavy cost compared to you're tank leaking or making the damage worst. Had to do that on the inside of one of my tanks in the past. With good results! Looks like it could hold up, but i wouldn't chance it. Windshields get a crack and the movement of the ride and bumps will cause it to get bigger. Imagine the weight of water pressure constantly applying pounds of pressure on a crack that one inch or better.

You could silicone a Doubler each side of the glass but of course you have to drill them.

With my above tank refugiums (sumps) its easy enough to control the waters surface level with a valve. I cracked this 20 gallon while drilling.
Funny I have never cracked thick glass while drilling tanks, only small ones like 50 gallon or less,

If nervous, you could always just sandwich the crack, with a couple small pieces of glass.

Thanks for your thoughts. I'll be getting another tank and try again. It held for a few days, and I decided to give the bulkhead a few good knocks to see if the crack would expand and it did. I prefer to be safe than sorry.
