Canada, eh.
Hi all,

I picked up a 40g breeder last weekend for a wicked price (tank had been used for under a year, no scratches or cracks)

So tonight, I'm doing a closer inspection of the tank, and notice what appears to be a crack on the bottom pane, below the brace. It appears to be outside rather than inside. Any suggestions here? I can't try the windshield repair kit, because I'd have to remove the entire bottom trim, etc. I've posted picture below, that sort of shows what I'm talking about.

Also, I found this simliar thread that shows better what the crack looks like..

I can't see the crack you are talking about. Is it a chip in the bottom left pane of your picture.

Also not all cracks have the same solution so a better view of your crack would help us out more.

Depending on your crack it can either be patched or the pane replaced.

If that is a crack, I would get another another pane of glass.

You could patch it with a piece 3" piece of glass to disperse the pressure, but would still have to strip the silicone.

My current trend is to recover the front and back pane then build a plywood tank that is twice as long as the original tank.

It appears to be a hairline crack, with the crack not being exposed on either sides of the glass, and it's about the size of a dime. I really have no idea how long it's been like this. For all I know, it could hold water for a long period of time without failing, but I'm not interested in chancing it. Looks like i'm just go pick up a new one, sigh.

emptied the tank tonight, and had to shuffle some fish around until I get a new one. Here's a better pic of the crack in question (thumbnail sized). It blends in well with the silicone, so it's hard to pickup on camera. Anyone think it's fixable? If so, how much work involved?

Maybe im a fool ( most likely am! ) but i have a tank thats whole corner is cracked at the bottom and all i did was put silicone on both sides of the crack and ive had it full of water for atleast 2 months now and its been fine. So IME i would think that a dap of silicone on both sides would fix that fine. My tank is only 12" tall as well though so that might contribute to its strenght, either way though.

Good Luck

Well, for all I know it might hold for years. But I didn't want to chance it being that I'm on the 4th floor of an apt building.

Any other suggestions here?
