I have a 58 gallon oceanic show tank thank the bottom peice of glass got broke. It has a v-shaped crack from back to front all the way from edge to edge. I figured I can put a new peice of glass to patch the whole bottom. What thickness glass should I use? Should I use silicone as an adhesive? And should I coat the whole bottom( I know silicone needs to breath to dry and cure. The tank is actually brand new still has the factory corner guards and the $279 price tag on it (my neice thought it would be fun to drop rocks in it ) . Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The patch should be the same thickness as the original piece. Check the corners to see if the tank is put together with glue or silicone. If it is silicone, you will be able to tell from the outside of the tank. You should be able to stick your fingernail in the seam. If so, remove the bottom and replace it with a new piece. At this point in time, you should consider having the bottom drilled.

or you can fix it by laminating a 1/4 glass to the bottom.you put your silicone as fast as you can every where.especially on the crack.and then put your 1/4glass on it and press everywhere real good so that the silicone layer get thin.this would fix your problem for very litle effort and $
oh ya...on the exterior of the tank

Thanks for some input. The tank is built with silicone. I guess if I laminate it from underneath I will need to reseal the inside of the crack also to make sure it is properly sealed. Someone on another site suggested that I could just resupport the bottom around the cracks and just seal the cracks back up? Someone else suggested to laminate it with treated plywood on the bottom? I am getting axious to get this fixed so I can get my Cknifes and Pang-cats out from one of my sumps so anymore suggestions or experience would be great. There is no way out of the 50,000 members someone else hasn't had this problem.

how i told you is probably the better way.silicone wont hurt on top of the crack.but if its only cracked..even without it would work...but you're never too careful
