Hello fellow fish heads, And do it your selfers. I just got a brand new ac110 and the case is cracked. I know you can buy replacement ones. I dont want to cough up 23 bucks plus shipping and wait another week for it. What can i use to fix this crack. I have used silicone plenty of times to fix cracks but this is on the peice that sits on the rim of the tank so i am worried about the pressure seperating it. What can i use that cemically bonds to what a ac110 case is made out of. I think it is just plastinc, not acrylic i dont know. But im sure you guys do. And im sure you guys have done this before. Please let me know what i can use that is oviously fish tank safe. And cemicaly bonds to the material so it will be as strong as it would be with out the crack. Thanks in advance as allways guys. Here are the pics.

Sincerely,

Jeff

If it's brand new, just return it for a new one.
I actually bought a new AC110 2 weeks ago that had a star shaped crack in the side of it. I thought about filling with silicone at first, but this is a brand new filter, and I paid for a brand new filter. So I returned/exchanged it. So glad I did.

I fixed my AC 110 case that was cracked. I used aquarium silicone on both sides. I made the bead very thick like toothpaste on both sides of the crack. I let it sit for 2 days until I tested it for it to dry. It was the part that sat on the rim of the tank also. It has been working for a year and half and so far it is still working.

Don't fix it send it back if you can. Its better to wait for a new one than to try and fix a broken. If you can not return it then may you can epoxy it. I know that auto zone sells an epoxy that is used for car parts, but do not know if it is fish safe.

If it's new then return it! Makes sense!

I used Loctite brand Dual compound quick set (24hour full cure) epoxy to reattach a broken off output valve off of a Fluval FX5 and it worked Great!

I have never heard of this stuff were can you get this product from. And is there a certain type that is fish tank/ water safe thanks for the heads up. And thanks for the responces guys. It isnt as easy as bring it back to the store thow. I bought it of somebody on ebay and they are being a dick about it. And want me to pay return shipping and all that bla bla bla. And wait two weeks or more for a new one. It honestly isnt worth the time and money to do so. If i could just bring it back to pet smart or something i would but i diddnt buy it there so i cant.

Is this what you are talking about. http://www.loctiteproducts.com/p/epxy_qset_s/overview/Loctite-Epoxy-Quick-Set.htm That is what i just found a a quick google search. It say not recommended for continuously wet surfaces.

That's the stuff but I basically used it in between the cracked off surface and on the outside so it's not being continually exposed to water.

Most people use certain super glues that won't harm aquatic life that use a chemical called cyanoacrylate in it. So just look for that in the superglue and you are good to go. The application that people use this stuff for is in saltwater coral attachments!

P.S. You could either call the Hagen Auquaclear and have them hook you up with replacement or just box that sucker up like new and take it to the petsmart and tell them that you don't have your receipt and you just want to swap it being that it's cracked. Tell them you got it from a different Petsmart... It's not your fault that it's cracked. Why should you have to pay for another one? Petsmart will just send it back or scrap it..... No Biggie. It's not like it's a Car!

Some may think that this unethical but IMHO it's not that big of a deal. These Companies make such a markup on all of this stuff anyhow... They can Afford to replace 1 filter assembly!

Thanks guys for all of the replies. I love you guys on here. Always give good advice. And i return the favor to others allso when i can. I bought some loctite for plastic bonding at lowes yesterday when i bought the wood for my stand. Going to use it out the outside of the case to bonde it. Again thanks i will post a thread on it in the diy section if it works out right.
