do I need to worry about this? the tank is used, and the previous owner said they used it as a growout, not sure when the crack happened but it's near a melt in the frame that they said was caused from a light that was too strong.

I personally would wait for the $1 for gallon sale and pickup a new one.

wait a minute
a 29 gallon doesn't have the middle brace in the frame, so the frame isn't even providing that much structural support anyway right?
I mean not doubting it but that's why some people can take the frames off tanks like that right

29 gallon isn’t that deep and shouldn’t create much pressure. Fill it with water and measure front to back at each corner and then also along the centerline front to back. If there is a bow the distance at center will be greater than the corners.

Even withouta brace the top provides some structural support. What do you mean by "29 long"? If you mean a standard 29 gallon which is 30", I'm not sure I'd personally trust it with no brace. Lots of people take the top frame off, but on tanks 20g and larger most people will have a piece of glass cut to use as a center brace. That's what I'd recommend doing.

i know standard 29 gallons are a bit taller and shorter lengthwise, mine's dimensions are 36x12x14, still came out to 29 gallons so I just call it a "29 long"
but yeah i'll look into making the center brace for it, how thick would you recommend the glass to be?

Long time ago I had a 55 gallon and the middle support broke. Used it like that for years never had any exciting days lol.

I have a 150 right now with a cracked center brace. Not risking that much water. I had a center brace made for it. Welded steel then powder coated.

1/2 inch glass would be good, about a 5 or 6" wide brace at least. Wider brace will be a little stronger. And, those dimensions are a standard 30 gallon
