It is time to do some maintence on my canister,
but I am afraid to open it for fear of water going everywhere. I am also afraid to disconnect the hoses and carry it to the sink or tub to open because I have visions of gravity taking effect and water going everwhere.
How do I open this thing up and what is the proper procedure for closing it back again. It is a fluval 405........... I no longer have the manual, it is in tiny pieces all over my back yard..

I also got clumsy and careless today and spilled a 5 gallon bucket on my sons bed, which means one of us has to sleep on the couch and the other will get kicked in the face and laid on all night for the next few nights.:irked::irked: He is a sleep ninja, its amazing how one little 7r old boy can take over an entire queen size bed!

So right now it would also be a wise idea not to further annoy my husband with a fishtank mishap back to back, hence the extra worry

I know with the FX5s it's a little different then the 05s but you should be able to stop the water flow with the aquastop valve. AFTER you turn unplug it. then just pop the valve off. you will need a little towel to get what little water does spill out. But if you have to towel in hand when you do this lillte water will acctually spill.

That should do it. just be carful when carrying this to where ever you are going to clean it at. Some water may want to spill out if you move around to much.

Hope that helps.

Just set it on a flower pot drain pan. They are available at most Garden Centers or hardware stores in their garden dept.

Sorry about the size of the pic. Got it off the web.

Lift the aquastop valve thing. That seals the hoses. Then unplug it. Then undo the other level thing and pull the hoses out. No water will shoot out. Lift the whole thing and put it in a bucket and you are good to go.

holy crap what is that picture!?!?!? hahahah

anyways, when im about to carry my FX5 outside, i close the INTAKE valve and let the filter run for another 5~10 seconds so it continues to pump water out of the filter. then i unplug it and close the OUT valve. this helps get rid of some of the extra water that you can spill

my 21" widescreen is to small to view this thread...

Unless the 405 differs from the 305 you can't close the intake without closeing the outlet. they have one aquastop that controls the waterflow for both inlet and outlet.
