The land of the pine
Recently I aquired two black crappie and put them in a 50g tank. I was planning to put them in an old 100g but discovered a crack in it. The crappie are very small, each around 3.5-4 inches. Almost everything has gone good so far. They are both eating bloodworms and gambusia readily, and they seem to have acclimated to tank life very well. The only problem is one has recently been mildly agressive towards the other, Chasing him around a lot. The other crappie is constantly hiding from him or swimming away. I've never delt with crappie aggression before. They have always been very calm fish when I've kept them. The best idea I could think of is to add another crappie or two and see if it help. I know the general rule with sunfish is one or three plus so I thought it may be the case with crappie too. I don't think the tank size is the problem because they are so small. I'll be moving them into somthing bigger eventually. Either my 100g(needs to be fixed first), or my 180( my pickerel is very close to life expectancy for their species). Thanks for any replies!

Crappie are generally not very aggressive. I've successfully kept 2 together along with groups and I very rarely noticed any aggression. I wouldn't worry about it, they will not harm each other the aggression will pass

Like Lep said, they usually aren't too aggressive. But if you're worried about it, adding some more decorations and things to break line of sight should help.
Thanks. As I said I'm aware crappie are not aggressive fish. I've kept them before. The problem is still occurring though. I will try more decorations. The tank is pretty bare.

Most of the crappie I've kept have been moderately aggressive. Try adding some giant dianos or something similar to distribute the aggression.

I wouldn't try those exact fish. Crappie will just eat them in no time once they put size on. I'd recommend creek chubs for dither if you'd add anything. Mine are fast enough to avoid most attacks from my green sunfish and they're super hardy, plus they're native.

Good idea. I actually use creek chubs as feeders for my pickerel. I catch them weekly.
