i have tried to keep several white and black crappie in the past and never had great luck. are any of you familiar w/ keeping these fish? whenever i try to keep them they seem to get cloudy eyes and fin problems (almost resembles fin rot) even though my tank params are fine. could too warm of water be the cause? any good advice on keeping crappie would be great! thanks guys!

My bass used to get that fin erosion too, until I put it in its own tank with no heater.

crappie are kinda hard to do in a home aquarium. they get pretty big, like deep water a lot of the time and they are picky eaters. i'd say if you really wanted to keep them happy i'd goo with atleast a 75 or 100 gallon tank, use low lighting, keep temps down and feed mostly gut-loaded live foods.

hes in a 180 gallon tank. the lowest i can go w/ temp is in the mid 70's. i think that is my problem.

what do you think the cloudy eyes come from?

what kind of lighting are you using? that could add to it aswell.

but really, depending on how long its been in there, it probably just hasn't completely got used to being in an aquarium, and with a good water change schedual, maybe lower lighting to reduce stress, and eventually it'll get used to it and be fine.

really you don't have to do anything, as it will get used to being in there and the cloudy eyes should go away after a while.

low 70s (72) is doable for crappie, i see them in the local springs all the time.

Do you have some structure, etc. for them to feel comfortable with?

That's cool to hear someone else is trying to keep them in a home aquarium. What is the temp of your tank?
