Im new to puffers and was wondering what puffer is right for me. The puffer would probably be in a minimum of 3'-18" and im not opposed to having a sw or brackish puffer. The only guideline is that itll eat crayfish:FIREdevil id love a pustulatus but around how much would one cost? all replies are appreciated

Not only are pustulatus impossible to find, they are crazy expensive. What is the maximum tank size you can afford to put one in? Usually only larger puffers eat crayfish.

The puffer eating the crayfish depends on the size of the crayfish. I catch invasive one as babies and quarantine (treat for parasites) to feed my puffers. If the cray is small enough and has the claws removed, the puffer should go for it. I had a dwarf puffer go for a 1 in. crayfish, my GSP will eat them up to 2 in (same size as him). But crayfish cannot be their only food- just a treat. If you want a cheaper, better food for them, start raising snails- pond and ramshorns work well.

+1 to all.

I feed crawdads to all of my puffers.
The MBU and Fahaka love them, (two largest Freshwater puffers)
and my GSPs love them as well, but they have to pick them a part slowly so I only feed them small ones that they can kill quickly.

At 9" its fun to watch the MBU take on big crawdads, but you should always be cautious of the pinchers.

If you have room for at least a 125 gallon (the bigger the better), I say Fahaka or MBU.

If not I would go with a congo or GSP (brackish)

Why not go for fahaka instead?

I strongly advise you to stay away from a MBU unless you have a HUGE tank with EXCELLENT filtration. These are HUGE puffers and are very messy. You would be much better off with a Fahaka which a 125g will suit very well.

Agreed, Mbus are huge.

minnow traps baited with hot dog can produce many very very small crayfish, in my experience. Like, one-inchers.
