I’ve recently fallen in love with wolf fish, that probably tells you where this is going to go.
From my understanding, red wolves are much more tankmate friendly than their larger cousins and can tolerate somewhat basic water. I only have one tank which isn’t fully stocked, and that is my African cichlid tank. They seem too large to be eaten, and a wolf too robust to take any crap from them. That leads me to asking this:
Can a red wolf cohab with mbunas?

I assume this is a hard no and I am crazy for asking.

Not sure if the SA fish will thrive in African conditions. i hear wolf fish can tolerate rough water as they are used to surviving in muddy receding pools.... The adult wolf can and will swallow anything up to half its size so eventually might become an issue.

I would imagine parameters may be the largest issue. I’ve read they can go up to 7.8 in ph, but my mbuna tank water may be too hard for it.

I dont think tank parameters are much of a problem to fishkeepers nowadays unless you are trying to breed fish, which even then it may be done. Many fish have adapted to a wide range of PH and hardness and can tolerate many water params. The only issue would be with wild-caught fish. I have no input on the fish compatibility sorry.

I normally say to try things if it’s not something totally ridiculous, but considering the cost of a wolf and nice mbuna, I wouldn’t try it. I think the smaller wolfs get around 8 inches and are not active. Why not get a cheap used 40b so you can have a wolf without the stress?

I guess the real trick would be finding space (and getting permission) for a 40 breeder :)

I’d imagine it would go like this:
Mbunas pick on the wolf
It bites one of them in half
Later gets hungry and finishes the job

I’ll pass until I can get another tank.
Thanks for the replies everyone!
