Picture of my boy ( at least I think it's a boy, been questioning it lately) to start things off :)

Everyday, I come home from work and shortly after I feed Rojo my festae. He sees me walk in the house and is eagerly at the glass treating me or watching my every move.

Shortly ever this routine behavior begins. Keep in mind this is only up untill he gets fed and only happens in the evening when I get home from work. Weekends he doesn't do it.

He starts off on the right side of the aquarium widdle of the water column and will dash towards the surface to the far left. Not striking the glass tops or even breaking the water's surface but just right up to it and down again. This is a fast motion and very much controlled.

He then darts back to the right side of the tank again to his original spot. But on the way, he will make sure to attack the fake plants I got. Not always the same plant but will charge at them and mouth it. Then back to the spot and get ready to dart again to the surface.

He watches me watching him do this over and over. Once I get his food in my hands he stops and will go near the top and do the mouth begging thing with some good quick body shakes in there.

He knows it's feeding time.and is definitely wide eyed and excited.

I feed him and he calms down. Will then just simply Cruz the tank and chill at the glass if I am near by to hangout.

I am very facinated by his behavior. Maybe I'm overthinking it but it seems like he does those things to get my attention as he want food.

What do you guys think?

I will try and record it sometime.

My old geo used to spit pebbles at the glass or "throw" fake plants at it to get our attention. At times he didn't even want food, just someone to hang out with, it was very cute. :)

Its pretty cool to think about how smart these wet pets of ours truely is. I don't think many people give fish much credit when it comes to intelligence.

They are definitely interesting animals.

Thanks for the feedback :)

Agreed, he's making sure you know it's dinner time or soliciting attention.

My red Texas cichlid taps on the glass with his nose to ring the bell for service. He too has been known to throw gravel at the glass if tapping doesn't work. If all else fails he swims quickly to the surface and smacks his tail to make a loud slapping sound as he turns back down. It isn't always for food. Sometimes he just wants me to visit.

Cichlids really are quite intelligent. I have found that they often enjoy having toys to play with, whether it's a floating ping pong ball or one of those Holee Roller small dog toys that they can roll along or pick up and carry. The latter is a small hollow rubber ball with honeycomb cutouts that sinks.
