I don't know how efficient this would be but it sounds cool in my brain:

Basically you are suspending rock formations in your tank. You would have to drill the roccks and put PVC or some rod through them to hold them up. I would say multiple rods for each structure. Then at the top either connect all the rods to a sheet of plexi or acrylic and lay it on top of tank. Or glue/drill it to wood and do the same.

Kinda like an upside down tank! Different!

I love the idea. You should just get some of the great stuff spray foam, spray out some balls and then cover them with concrete. That would cut down tremendously on the weight. What a cool idea!

I like Pharaohs idea. If I can find some styro or something around the house I will test it.

You could probably use TUFA ROCK...very porous, very light and reasonably natural looking. If you attached the top portion of the rod to a piece of buoyant material (like styrofoam), maybe this stalactite-like structure would float in the proper vertical orientation without having to "hang" on something.

Good call on the tufa rock. The stuff is really light.

Plus it's really easy to manipulate, you can bore holes with a screwdriver and a hammer. Be sure to wear gloves though, this stuff will cut you up bad!
