Crazy thought here, but has anyone ever kept or heard about people keeping Discus with dats? I know both species can handle 82 degrees and like clean water. I seen it on YouTube but I am curious about long term viability.

It's possible. Keep in mind that the 2 species prefer slight differences in pH and dats prefer a minimum of 5 dGH of hardness whereas the discus prefer zero hardness (soft/acidic).
Your best bet may be to adjust the parameters for the Dats and to mix in F1000 discus. WC discus will likely have the hardest time making any pH adjustment. Look for any Florida farm-raised discus. Those were probably maintained in the high-end of their parameter preferences.

CB discus would be the way I would go. Good idea on the Florida bred idea. The area I live in our municipal water is very soft and clean. To the point that apparently some of the local fish breeders around here just use the tap water for some of the finicky SA fish without RO it or adding any sort of softener.

This question was asked on this sub forum a couple of months ago, at that time I thought it was a good idea as well but after reading the responses and personal experience, I realized that you can probably house smaller (4-5") dats with discus (F1000, like what Oddball said) for a couple of years. I recently traded my discus out because my datnoids have become more rowdy, they steal food off of other fishes all the time and when they hit food, they hit hard! So even though a dat would probably never try to eat a discus, it can kill it easily by just trying to steal food from a discus. Just imagine a scenario where a discus is munching on a piece of shrimp, the dat tries to steal it in a classic "suction" style, misses the food but hits the discus... Discus are thin and not as strong as dats are.
