ok i have a 20 gallon tank that has been cycled and established for more than 7 months. i have a 30 gal filter on it lots of gravel and plants. (fake plants) i am familiar with the cycleing process and i have all the liquid test kits, to say the least i have 10 tanks in my front room. so i know alot all thanks to this brilliant website. u guys are awesome :headbang2 anyway here it is.

i just got an awesome deal at petsmart. 20 gallon sea-clear brand acrylic tank. its nice. it was an online return never touched water or unwrapped at that. paid 50 bucks with a 170.00 price tag on it. (managers special) they wanted it out of the store quick because they dont sell many acrylic tanks in store and couldnt put it in the computer apparently. anyway.

back to my question. could i just take all the gravel, plants, filter, and decorations and just switch it all to the new tank. i would take part of the water as well prob like 60 percent so it would be like a very confusing water change. i figure it may cause a mini cycle but nothing major. using lots of TLC, lots of prime and testing the water... do you think it would work or do you think i would kill my fish. i have no problem setting the tank up and doing it the normal new tank way i prefer which is fishless with shrimp in pantyhose (works great for me) but im trying to save money at the moment and i want to take the glass twenty down and i dont want to have to buy a new filter, plants, gravel , heater etc. whats your opinions? throw them at me.:feedback:

You should be fine transferring everything including the live media at once. Whether or not you do a large water change at the same time is more up to how fragile your fish are than your bio. I wouldn't do a tank move and a water change on the same day to a fish.

Siphon the water you want to keep into a bucket before messing the gravel so that you transfer less funk, other than that just move everything and it should be easier on the fish than when you brought them home. The water will be the same as after a standard water change, they're familiar with the decor, and they already know everybody. As long as you don't wash the substrate or filter the tank will still be 100% cycled

alright, i figured i would be ok but i still wanted to ask. i have a african butterfly fish in there that i adore. but hes probably the most fragile out of the group. thanks alot for your input guys. and if anyone else has anything to add feel free. im always up to hear some good advice!

You'd be fine transfering everything over at once. I recently upgraded from a 90g to a 160g. I used just about all the water from the 90g and added new water to fill the rest up. I was doing 50% h20 changes about every three days on the 90g, because of my fish stock overload, so it was no different doing almost 50% new water in the bigger tank. :)

Same for me when I went from the 75g to the 125g.
