I'm sure this has been done before, but I thought i'd share my story. I setup my 220 around 4 months ago, and after I got the sump setup and plumbed and got the tank filled I threw in some rosies to help speed up the cycle process. I Also used old sponges and such. Well once I moved my cichlids from my 75 to my 220 after 2 weeks or so, they made short work of the 24 rosies...or so I thought. I was messing around in my sump today (a 55 gallon tank) and i noticed something odd. 1 rosie was swimming around, happy as can be. This might not sound that crazy to start with but this means he got through the slots in my overflow box (crazy skinny slots) down my standpipe (not to suprising) Through my filter floss (some slight gaps cause i'm paranoid of clogs and overflows) through my drip tray (I have no idea how) wiggled through my bioballs (10 or 15 gallons worth, half submerged, half for wet/dry) and now resides on the back side of my bubble trap. To top all this off I have had a 3" crayfish in my sump since about a week after I moved the fish over. How he wiggled through this gontlet I will never now. But I figured he deserves to live out his life safely in my sump, And now i feed him regularly.
Crazy, huh?

Crazy, a LFS near me fed guppies in one of their saltwater tanks and some got away. Long story short...the guppies flourished in the stores Saltwater sump and reproduced into a small little colony. How a freshwater guppy could not only survive saltwater, but reproduce amazes me

I was stocking one of my tanks and I had bought a baby male kenyi. He was just starting to show his yellow color.

To make a long story short, after he was placed into the tank I decided while I was at it to re-arrange some of the rock work.. accidentally there was a mini landslide. I didn't think too much of it at the time, since the rocks didn't fall too hard or too fast.

A couple hours later I noticed the little guy was missing. I quickly started picking everything up and found he was pinned between two rocks, and once i released him there was a hole in his stomach. He seemed very stiff and breathing was rapid and he stayed close to the bottom not moving much... Figured he was a goner and it was a matter of time. Over the span of a few weeks his hole closed up.

The lucky little dude somehow pulled through. Now he's the most aggressive and colorful Kenyi I have.

I was using the purge valve at the bottom of my FX5 with my python attached.

one of my khulie loaches had been living in the filter for who knows how long and went shooting through the purge valve, through the hose, through the thing attached to the sink, and into the sink. It swam around in there until I went to turn off the water. It's lucky I have a screen over the drain in my sink or I would not have even noticed. Needless to say he went straight back into the tank lol.

Great thread with good stories. I have one not as good, but will add to the thread I had a 75 gallon planted that was divided in half with male Betta on each side with tank mates (cories and etc..) I did a water change on a Saturday as usual shutting off all filtration. Drained and filled as usual somehow forgot to turn the filters back on. I work out of town, left for work Mon returned Fri night and didn't notice until sat morn there was no filtration I did a 50% water change immediately and turned the filters back on and never lost a fish even though I couldn't see through their water!!

At least you have a heart to let him live.
