I have and umbee that is now roughly 5". It is in a 75 with 2 pleco's and a convict for something to chase around. The strange behavior i have noticed is that it will get down near the substrate and start to shake violently. Then normally makes a round chasing after all the fish in the tank and the imaginary ones outside the glass. Is this violent shaking normal? I expected the bullying of the other fish, but this shake is new to me, what do you guys make of it?

Can we get a picture? If only the head is shaking, usually that is male showing dominance or wanting to breed (trying to attract females). Females - usually whole body quivers (not head).

That is something you see often with fish that are spawning. It's been theorized that the fish make some sound that is amplified when they expand their operculum and shake. They also have this behaviour when they are tring to establish where they are in the pecking order of tank mates.

If you want to read more on this get the book Fish Behavior in the Aquarium and in the Wild by Stephan Reebs. Excellent book

Here's a short video clip of my pair. Note the male's behaviour: http://www.aquamojo.com/movie/Umbee.wmv
