I just heard an audible creak coming from my 180 gallon tank with wooden stand. This is probably the 3rd or 4th time I heard this so I am starting to get extremely worried. The tank is sitting on some shims that I put under the tank to level it off. This is one part in front of the tank that has a 2 foot long spot where it does not rest on shims. Is this a big factor should I be worried at all?

Does anyone have experiences with hearing creaks from your large tank? Should I be worried about it and put shims everywhere?

Will try and post a pic soon.

It depends on how old it is. I have heard a loud crack from one of my tanks and that was about a year ago and still havent found out what it was. I just think its the material settling. even if its really old and you think it has settled as much as it can it will still make some noise from time to time. I would keep and eye on it but if your really worried than I think the only option to ease your mind is replace the stuff.....ya thats a last resort but it depends on how worried you are, location of the tank, and what would be lost if the unmentionable did happen. food for thought i suppose.

Yeah, I would put some support under there, it appears to already have bowed some (which is = pressure point = BAD NEWS)

I know it'll be a lot of work, but if you are concerned (like I was) it'll be really worth it after you're all done. I was so happy, and now, I can sleep at night!

personally i would take it down and re-do the bottom and make sure its leveled ..or get a new stand

It is leveled. I checked. I am just going to add shims along every part of the bottom. Ill let you know how it goes when I get it done. Thanks for advice.

Have you had a water leak or spill lately? Awhile back, I had a ton of trouble getting air out of my canister and I sprayed and leaked water several times before I finally got it going. I towel dried everything best I could. But, I did notice a few creaks afterwards. That was about the same time I started running the furnace since it was getting colder out. I have the exact same stand (at least it appears to be identical). I have a 150 on mine.

After a few days, it quit creaking and has been fine since.

Good luck!

Most likely it'll hold, but I'd drop the water level a few inches until you get it secured, it'll take some of the stress off the stand.
Homeowner's/renter's insurance?
