These guys are about two and a half months old. Parents were both creamsicles - mom 90% orange, dad 90% white. I've kept many, many midas over the years but always as solos in their own tanks, so this is my first midas spawn. I decided to grow this batch out and see what they do for colours/markings - hoping to get one "perfect" midas that I've always been on the lookout for. Anyone know about the genetics here - will they all eventually fade into various white, orange, or white and orange colours? Or will some retain their natural barred appearance like they have now? There's 2 or 3 so far that have faded, rest aren't doing anything yet.

I agree with Coltiger1975..... Myself and a good friend used to breed midas some years ago... I had an Orange female and he had a male that was almost all white with a few splashes of Red/Orange.....They produced Orange and white , solid Orange and solid white offspring.... none retained the barred appearance to adult
.. Also when we bred 2 white ones together they produce fry that over time turned solid white.... The creamsicle one in my avatar is offspring of the solid orange female and the mostly white male..... I am currently raising juveniles from T UIC that I got at 1.25 to 1.5" size which I estimate are approximately 4 months old ,they have yet to change color ..... However they come from two Orange parents and grand parents so they are expected to turn IOrange......... Congratulations on your spawn though I do believe you will get a very nice one since you have many to choose ,sorry for the long reply but I really enjoy talking to others about Midas lol.....

The silver barred coloration they have now is what I call "hide me I'm a baby" colors. My Saggitae fry where the same way, silver barred till about the 3in size. Then they peeled to adult colors.

Statistically with two very different color parents you should get about 25% that take on moms color, another 25% that takes on dads colors. The remaining 50% will be a mix of the parents and possibly some resesive colorations ie barred from non barred parents.

Haha long replies are good, midas are absolutely my favourite fish and I always seem to be alone on that front so it's nice to have others who enjoy them too :D

Yeah I pretty much assumed the whole spawn would end up as orange, white, or orange and white in varying degrees...just not sure how long it takes them to fade and get there. I would actually be pretty thrilled if I had a couple who stayed barred...I've always really loved barred midas, but only ever have been able to find and keep one - many, many years ago now. But I suspect they'll all fade eventually. Their parents came to me at about 1.5" in size and THEY were already totally faded and you could see their white/orange markings, so I was kind of hoping the fry would follow in their footsteps so I don't have to grow out 100 or so midas for EVER just to see if there is one I really like lol.

Think I'm going to pull the swarm out of their current 40 long grow out in a week or so and throw them into the 8ft tank to continue growing. It's 100% not my planned stock list for that tank, but right now it only has 2 marbled fenestratus and 2 cutteri while I wait/hope for the species I want to add to become available from my supplier again. I really don't want to have to catch all the buggers down the line when they get too large, but they also really need more space.

Here's a pic overload and since they say a picture is worth a 1000 words that makes this an extra long reply lol.... Pictures of the spawn I was talking about which were taken with a film camera back around the year 2000... I just remembered that I used to take pictures and put them in the photo album that I still have from way back then ...... The grandparents of the offspring were the orange female and the white with some red / orange male I was talking about ....the parents of those were from a Orange male and a mostly white female..... You could get an idea of the different and varying degrees of color change that will take place with yours... One of the pics below of the white Midas is an offspring of 2 of the white ones I picked out of that group.... He grew to 14 and a 1/2 inches inches and died in 2014.... The barred 1 is 1 that I currently have now and hes pushing close to 13" he is an F1 from lake Managua...... The other uncolored 1 is 1 of 5 juvenilesF2 that I currently have from lake Nicaragua they are expected to turn Orange...... Looking forward though to seeing how yours out always exciting to watch Midas grow and yours are going to grow very nicely in an 8' tank.....
