Man I am having such a hard time choosing tank mates for my chubs. I have a 55 with a sump which is extensive aquascaped with stone and drift wood, and is slowly being planted. What suggestions are out there for some good tank mates. I want something interesting (i know interesting is a matter of opinion) with personality.

Madtom catfish would be good, log perch, bluespotted sunfish, silversides of some kind would be a good contrast to the chubs but still a schooling fish. Shad, hogsuckers or any kind of sucker, a small sucker like jump rocks would be best. Darters, some yellow perch populations stay suitably small, shiners, the list is long.

I'd worry more about what th emadtom would eat, I'd let the chubs get to be 1/2 adult size before I'd add a madtom of like a tadpole madtom, they can get to be 6" or more long. Most madtoms are more than 3" adult length, a LMB might eat one but they would be good in a tank of chubs.

The big aggressive Creek Chubs or fallfish will eat and kill anything much smaller than themselves thats not as aggressive, so I would make sure its a big madtom (Slender ,margined or a Stonecat etc) or one of the big hardy shiners, I believe most darters and many minnows would get eaten (some of the ones big enough not to get eaten are endangered like the Niangua darter).

I have creek chubs,white suckers,central stonerollers,logperch darters,greensided darters,emerald shiners,spotfin shiner,stonecat madtom,orangespotted sunfish,bluntnose minnows,blackstriped topminnows, and small green sunfish,bluegill,smallmouth bass all together in a 125 gallon.
