Received these guys today supposed to be a male+female pair but I think they're most likely 2 females due to the white dorsal stripe. Not being real familiar with Lugubris I could be wrong and plan on venting them after they've had a couple of days to acclimate to see if I see any differences. If anybody thinks they can sex them from the pics please do and let me know. Also if anyone has any experience breeding Lugubris feel free to add some info. about it. Thanks in advance.

They look great, starting to get some pike interest. Really nice looking fish, they almost look powdered.

I'm leaning towards both female. I haven't seen a male lugubris species with a white stripe in the middle of the dorsal fin. I have seen some female lugubris species that don't have a pink belly as the result of a dominant female being in the group. The females still retain the white stripe in the dorsal fin.

Thanks man, it'd be awesome to get another member on here into pikes. They really do, just like my Centrodoras they have a really unique color like somewhere between grey, powder blue and a hint of lavender. I just hope mine get those red cheeks(gill covers) like I've seen on some other Tocantins. Next hopeful pick up will be a Zebrina.

Great looking pikes

Thanks man, much appreciated.

Yeah, I was worried that would be the case. I had hoped that since I couldn't find much info. on specifically cf. Lugubris especially sexing that perhaps they might be sexed differently then other Lugubris. Though disappointing not having a pair I really appreciate the input, thanks man.

looks like two females cause of the white stripe
Thanks man, I was thinking the same but hoping I was wrong.

I'm not a lugubris group specialist by any means, but I seem to remember a couple of species in the group where both the male and female have the white stripe ... it's just very small in height on the males and much thicker in the females. I admit I could be misremembering though.

Thanks for the info. I'm a novice when it comes to pikes so the little I do know is what I gleaned from the internet, which is hardly a reliable source so I appreciate any additional info. I can get. The seller told me the same thing about the dorsal stripe that you mentioned, perhaps he's right. Gotta ask what I asked in my first thread about these guys though, can they be definitively sexed by venting? Freebyrd was of the opinion that they can, but I haven't seen any info. concerning venting pikes specifically. So while I know it's a go to thing with most other cichlids I'm unsure if venting is a reliable way with pikes. It begs the question why visual cues are the most prominent way I've seen for sexing pikes? Is it because venting is unreliable with pikes or hasn't been used often or just that there's too little info on the internet about Pikes period.

In either case man, thanks again for the input. I still plan on checking the vents and if it doesn't conform to what I know of venting just comparing the vents of my 2 individual Tocantins and my presumed male Tapajos II.

Yeah they look great...nice pictures. I have no idea on the sexes but, my two 'tapajos II" have NO white stripes in the dorsal :) so who knows. I asked Rapps the vent them male and female, which he agreed to do.

awesome. Looks like Snookn21? Great looking fish and best of luck.

I agree that white stripes denote F from what i've gathered and my own experience but I'm new to pikes myself picking up all 3 of the species I own over the last few months.
