Is Crenicichla hadrostigma a rare pike? What about compared to Cr. minuano?

I am really curious to hear what you guys have to say on this.

Thanks!

I think you should start sharing your pike sources instead of just hoarding them all for yourself and not sharing! Yeah!

Crenicichla hadrostigma are fairly rare. They have been collected and offered by Oliver, and I think that George (Shark Aquarium) had some for sale awhile ago.

Personally I think they are dead sexy pikes! I love the humeral blotch above and slightly behind the eye, very unique. Plus the greenish tiger stripes on their body, just incredible.Seriously I think they are a hott pike!!! I wanted to get some when Oliver had them, but couldn't find anyone to import them for me. :(

Cr. minuano is much more common, though still very cool!!!

Thanks Jer,
Question for you. Does both the male and female have the post orbital ocellus or just the female?
If you think I have rare pikes now, you ain't seen nothing yet my friend :D
Cheers,

I can't really answer that with accuracy, but I think both genders carry the post orbital ocellus, as it looks like part of their coloration. I would make a guess to say that the females have some sort of ocelli in the dorsal like a lot of the Saxatilis group pikes do. You'd have to get a group and see to be honest.

Takes the fun outa it if you don't share ya know!

LOL.........ok well maybe they are something other than minuano or hadrostigma. Any other pikes with that slightly terminal, beak-like mouth?

The female has a bright pink/purple coloring just coming in and her belly is swollen. The ovipositor is slightly exposed. She is courting with multiple males, but one in particular is paying special attention to her. He has an interesting greenish striping that is pretty intense. Only "she" has the post orbital spot, which is haloed by a rosette of bright silvery white. I will check the dorsal fin next.
Thanks,

Pictures would really do wonders ya know? Breeding is always a good thing!!! Are they a type of Saxatilis? Not many nonSaxatilis pikes have a suborbital ocelli above their lateral line like hadrostigma does, which you seem to have likened them too.

Photos maybe tomorrow. Too late now. I am looking forward to Uruguay in November to collect celios. Other than them and punctata I am not much of a Southern South America pike guy.......oh, and vitatta of course :)

Anyway, thanks for the info. I look forward to showing you some pix!

Yeah!!! Gotta love vittata!!! They are amazing pikes!!! Its a tough call for me between them and celidos. . . they are that awesome!! Celidos win though, who doesn't love that ridiculously awesome lipstick they have?!

Looking forward to the pictures!

The pikes in Uruguay are all fantastic in their own ways. . . it's a great place to collect. . .

Let's get some of those pics :D
