Crenicichla Nothophthalmus

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If they are true Nothos... I'd need to see a pic of the male and female with their dorsals extended to believe it.

NICCCEE!! Notos aren't very common, probably the best looking of the dwarfs as well. Love the males dorsal fin!! Hope someone gets some, we need some more in the hobby!

I just talked Peter from Atlantis to see if he can send me some photos of male and females with dorsal extended. Not a great pic but you do see black on dorsal and some red around.

We'll see.

I have been seeing nothos around in the past few months. I would have picked up a few, but I'm overstocked right now anyways in the pike department.

Peter sent me another photo of them. It is a little better. You still can't see if the first 3-5 dorsal spines are freestanding or not.

I'm not sure the females have the extended dorsal spines the males do. Anybody know?

only the males have the extended dorsal spines.

It is easy to distinguish adults of this species from C. regani another similar species with a much wider distribution and variation, by focusing on the dorsal fin. The first 3-5 doesal fin rays in male C. notophthalmus are unattached, free-standing and much longer than the other rays. Females have dorsal fin ocelli like C. regani but the number of spots in C. notophthalmus is usually one (occasionally two) where as C. regani females have a very varied number of patters and spots. The spots are always black in both species but the ring around the black spot is usually white in C. regani and red in C. notophthalmus.

Looks like regani bro, at least at the moment....:(. That sucks, was really hoping to see some Notos in the hobby again!! maybe there are some contaminants. Here are some pictures from Vinnys site, you can clearly see the red around the ocelli of the female...;)
