Some 3 months ago I bought, 10 of the above species, at about 3 inch tl.
Now, some 3 months later, I was convinced that I had 10 male specimens, the fish having grown to over 4 inch tl,.
To say I was disappointed is a mega understatement.
But then a couple of days ago, I looked in one of the two tanks they are in and found a solitary female. She has such a dull coloured spot in her dorsal fin, that it's very hard to see.
So life's good again, one out of ten ain't bad !!!

I recently got a group of c. regani Tapajos and I was worried at first too, I asked when I was buying them if he could try to put a 50/50 split male female in there but when I looked in the bag they all looked male! it was just their spots were really light, even now even though I know that I have 3 females in there I still get the smaller ones mixed up with my smaller male sometimes

You have more adult males in 1 tank? I had 2 males and 1 female regani in 75 gallon tank and smaller male was almost dead after few weeks. Larger male was chasing him all the time.

Yep, I have 5 adult males in one tank, plus one female. Also in this tank are 4 S.lilith and 5 A.heckelii.
In a second tank, 2 of the 5 barcelos are adult, two still remain at juvenile size, and one is a semi adult female, so now I have 2 females.
Both tanks are set up the same, and are 52 inch long.

No sorry don't have any photos at the moment, but will take some in next few weeks.

I also have a nice pair of C.regani (tapajos), forming and think they may spawn in next couple of weeks.
I suggest you put more caves in Jiri

Hi all, thanks for your replies.
Yes I have four males and 1 female in one tank, and 4 males and 1 female in a second tank. I didn't intend having one female to each tank, I simply put 5 into each tank.

I found too that spotting the females was very hard at first, because the colouration in the dorsal fin is so light it's almost impossible to see at times.

Go forward to today, and I've now found a second female and the first one has transformed into a fully coloured 3 spotted female, I'm very happy.

No , sorry I haven't taken any photos yet but will do in near future.

I also have a pair of regani (tapajos) which have just formed, and they are a nice pair ar 4 inch t,l

Hi,
Yes I have more than one male in each of my barcelos tanks, both tanks are 52 inch long by 15 x 18". I have what look like 4 males in each tank, plus a female in each tank (found yet another female last week).
The females are very difficult to I D at first as judd says, the colouration of the dorsal spots is very light. However I've found that mine two weeks on now has quite distinctive colouring and has turned out to be a 3 spot type.
The second female (which is in the other tank ) is showing light colouration in her dorsal but I'm sure this will darken and become more easily seen in the next week or so.

I'm afraid I don't have any photos taken at the moment, but will take some in next couple of weeks.

In addition to the above C.regani (barcelos), I have a pair of normal C.regani, plus a trio I am picking up on 9th Feb, plus some more C.regani coming in from Germany that same weekend.

I have sufficient tanks to keep all these sub groups separately and will let you know how things go on.
I would add more, a lot more caves to your tanks if you are losing males, I have no problems at all keeping my males together. Mind you the large S.lilith and A.heckelii in with each lot of barcelos tend to keep any aggression down
