A while back I bought 3 of these fish originally. I bought a fourth not long after the first three. I lost the smallest fish which I suspected to be my only female.
I have a strong feeling the remaining two of my original 3 are male and the the fourth is also male but I question whether or not it is the same as the others.

the first pictures were moved and I can't edit them back in. If you want to see them let me know.

This is how the original two look today at 4.5":

They both look almost exactly alike only one's a little bigger than the other. Neither have developed any white edging or black smudge in the dorsal or pink on the belly.

The last one I bought at 5":

It was purchased as a female as it had a black smudge in the dorsal but the smudge has faded long since. It looks more elongated in the picture than in real life but not by much. I think the other two fish are the slightest bit taller than this one.

Someone on an other forum who said they had sp. Pernambuco told me my fish were not sp. Pernambuco.
That's all I have to pin an ID on them. Otherwise they're just another saxatilis group pike and I wouldn't feel comfortable trying to breed them (if it turned out one of them was a female) and distributing the youngsters or the fish themselves if it turned out I couldn't house all three males.

Awesome! They definately are starting to color up for you. There are so many different species and variants of Saxatilis pikes, its difficult to ID them all. Even Vinny (pike guru) has trouble IDing them sometimes. Collection area does help out a great deal though. They almost look like they might be anthurus males, but I doubt thats what they are. Superb either way, and I am jealous of you!! Congrats on some great pikes! So far they ARE indeed lookin to be males...but time will tell, as normally its not until they are 6 to 8" that you can accurately sex the Saxatilis pikes...;)

Morbid,

If you get them in the local stores anywhere between the OC and San Diego area, they are probably sp 'pacaya'. I know the guy who has bred them and distributed them around in the socal area. Like what PP said it is very hard to ID Saxatilis pikes unless the collection point is known.

They look real nice. Where can I get this variant gary? In OC?

all three of them are the same species imo, besides the gold "spangling" everything else about them is identical.

whatever the fish are, they are very nice and i hope you get a pair!

Don't get my hopes up! :D
I got them from Ocean Blue. I never did pick up that little bellycrawler he had left. I wanted to trade the largest "Pernambuco" back for it.
I had mentioned in the first thread it wouldn't have surprised me if they were "sp. Pacaya" after seeing a picture of those.
If the guy sent some Brian's way, well mystery solved! *crosses fingers*

weird the last pic looks like a Lucius to me, but im no expert.

Funny. I saw an ID thread here of one that got ID as a lucius and I thought, "what's the difference between that and my guy?" but I shrugged it off cause I'm no expert either. :grinno:

I just came upon this thread while doing a search.

Your fish are Cr. sp. 'Pacaya'.
