So, I did start a thread trying to decide what to get, but I think I've decided on a crested gecko. I'm not very knowledgable though, I was hoping you guys could help. First of all, I was wondering if one could survive in a rubbermaid tub, which is supposedly around 25g? The dimensions are 28.8" x 19.7" x 16.5".
My next question was what I should use as substrate. I definitely want a very natural looking tank. I also was curious as to where I can buy plants that would be suitable for the tank.
Next question/problem. The tank comes with a lid, but the lid is solid, so there would be little to no ventilation. If I cut out the middle of the lid and replace it with mesh, would that provide enough ventilation? Also, I read that they can survive at room temperature and that humidity is not too important. Would one misting a night suffice? Also, how does one go about misting? Is there a way that is better than the others, do I need a specialized piece of equipment?
As for feeding, I was planning on feeding one of those specialized diets, and maybe feeding some sort of treat every once in a while. What could I use for treats?
Next question, could there be a way to have a small pool at one side of the container that has fish in it? I know that sounds like a long shot, but I thought I would just throw that out there. A different option would be if there is anything else it could cohab with.
The final question is, any tips on getting your parents to let you get a lizard when they normally don't allow it. :D I'm 15, and I did convince them to let me get a 120g tank, so I think I can convince them for one little lizard, especially if I can manage to also fit fish in there somehow.
That's all the questions for now, sorry for the lengthy thread. Thanks!

My daughter is 15 and has a crested. I just love this little critter. You are definitely going to need something with air. I'm not sure about a rubbermaid container. A small aquarium with a screen lid would work. They like to climb the walls of the glass, not sure if they can on plastic. We also use the artificial plants that suction cup to the walls. The gecko is hardly ever on the ground, she's always up in the plants or on the walls and ceiling. For substrate, we use something like the eco-bark stuff.

Feeding, we use the prepared gecko diet that you mix with water. As an occasional treat we buy her loaded crickets or mix a little bit of fruity baby food in with her food.

You will also need a heat lamp to turn on during the day even though they are nocturnal. For humidity we mist once in the morning and once as night with a spray bottle. That seems to be fine.

I'm sure you can get creative to add a pool but cresties are hunters and I don't know if they would eat the fish. There are some really good online resources where my daughter obtained her info.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the help, that answered quite a few of my questions. Anyone else have any input?

So, I just cut out part of the lid and replaced it with this kind of mesh screen, almost like the kind of screen that is used in windows.
Just planning ahead, at least for the pool, I have some sort of a plan. The bottom of the tub is around 20" x 14" x 16". I was thinking I would use 8" of the total length for a small pool, and the remaining ground area for plants, branches, and other things for the gecko.
Anyone have any thoughts, suggestions, etc...?

My thought is that you should just buy a 20 gallon tall aquarium for a crested. I imagine it's hard to view a gecko in a tub with a top on it.

I could, but I already had the rubbermaid. Oh, and I was planning on replacing parts of at least one side of the tub with mesh so that I could see it.
