For my birthday today :headbang2 , i was able to convince my lovely girlfriend to accompany me to local fish stores :woot: , at least, the last ones that are left here in Memphis... i checked out a saltwater store and they had some fish that i've never seen or heard of before... they were labeled as "Crocodile Cardinals" they honestly look kinda like a combination of a freshwater bichir and a peacock bass, and brownish colored.

they were only about 3" long, but look like they could get a pretty nice size, and from their mouths alone look like they might have a pretty nasty disposition. the place is renowned for it's lack of desire to answer questions or help people new to saltwater, so i could never get an answer about them. :swear:

anyone ever had one, or know anything about them?

i'm curious about them because they looked pretty nifty, but the only tank i've got available to use would be a 20 gallon.

Nothing comes up on that name. Did you grab a pic? The only crocodile fish I know of with the body style you describe is Papilloculiceps longiceps. Definitely NOT suited for a 20 gal since it grows to 40".

definitely not the same fish, and no pics since my digital cam is completely FUBAR right now... ARGH. it looks pretty nifty and was only like $7 anyways, so i might have to grab some, but i don't know...

Know what family or where it is from?here is a fairly normal looking sw cardinal and a crocodilefish which looks closer?

Perhaps a brown morph of the Wolf Eel? (actually a goby) They kind of look like polypterus. Don't know about the peacock bass part though. Never ran across a fish with that name.

it looked more like the first one, but was darker and kinda splotchy colered. it had the nose protuberences like a bichir, and it's mouth looked more like a grouper than a cardinal. it definitely wasn't a bottom dweller either and looks nothing like the crocodilefish. i don't know the family or anything, but i'm going to try AGAIN to see if i can pry info out of these people...

if nothing else, i'll try to get back by there to take a pic...

Yup, now I am curious,

If it is a cardinalfish could it be this one? Pseudamia gelatinosa, the jelly cardinal, a 4 1/4" max. nocturnal reef predator that lives from east Africa-french Polinesia, and from japan-australia.
