I picked up this juvie specimen today, and I'm not sure what he is... my best guess is some sort of Crocodile Gar Hybrid? I've never seen a Tropical Gar in the flesh though either. I've kept Longnose, Alligator, and Florida Gar and have a Shortnose right now, and he doesn't seem to fit neatly in with what I'm familiar with... Plus, the store I bought him usually labels Florida Gar as such, but labeled this one as an "alligator gar" which it is not in a thoroughbred sense. He seems to lack the duskiness of them and seems considerably more vibrant (forgive the ****ty mobile phone picture quality) and the snout does seem more broad for a florida; possibly two rows of teeth it looks like, but too small to tell for sure.... and while the pictures don't really give you a clear idea, but the caudal fin seems exceptionally elongated for a florida gar.

Then again I haven't seen as many juvie floridas as the average gar aquarist probably has though... so I don't know.

Opinions?

Yup, perhaps those juvenile markings were throwing you off. The jaw structure of the Lepi. species versus the Atra. species is just too significant though. No way it could be a tropical.

Florida for sure.
