Hello all

Is it true that the cross brace across the top of the tank (ie connecting the front and back glass panes) effectively "doubles" the strength of the tank? In other words, a cross brace across the top of a 48inch tank effectively makes it as strong as a 24inch tank. The result is that glass thickness suitable for a 24inch tank can be used to build the 48inch tank?

yup! we term it "euro bracing" here based on local tank makers construction techniques and methods. they recommend such bracings so to strengthen the lifespan of fish tanks and the prevention for inconsequential wear and tear. the thickness of the tank glass also has a way to determined by those expert tank makers , usually they provide thickglass and the size increases, like 3ft they can go 6mm-8mm, for 4ft- 8mm , for 5-6ft 10mm-12mm and so on, really depends on the form factor also . perhaps you can ask your local tank makers to give assistance.cheers!
