I want to start breeding Betta Splenda's but I cant find a female Halfmoon that someone would like to sell.

I live in Australia and I cant order one from overseas because customs will hold it for 10 weeks and it will more then likely die.

So I was wondering if you get your usual hunk of junk female betta's from petstores and bred it with a purebred Halfmoon male, what would they fry more resemble.

its just like breeding between different strains of discus

the average pet store betta is usually a veil tail, even females... when bred to a halfmoon, you will get mostly veil tails because the veil tail is dominant over the other tail shapes. depending on the genetics of your fish, you might get some short tails, deltas, or even super deltas, but it is unlikely to get any halfmoon from the first generation. you could cross breed the the resulting fish that have the largest fins and you would eventually get halfmoons, but this will take some time.

Thankyou for this information, how many generations do you think it would take to come out with some halfmoons?

it would take at least 2 or 3 generations of cross breeding. breeding bettas to get a specific outcome takes a lot of time and hard work. good luck!

the value of a betta is based more heavily on looks than genes. genetics are important but breeders cross breed all sorts of bettas to each other to get what they want... i am raising a spawn right now that have all sorts of colors on them. the parents are blue and yellow, referred to as mustard gas, but there are a lot of red babies

Thanks guys, I just got a awesome pair of crimson green Giant betta's and then I got a pure white halfmoon pair... So with a bit of good luck I should have some nice ones.
