crossing CA with African Cichlid

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This is not something I've ever heard of.

Some of the waters in Central America are very close to those found in the Rift lakes additionally with many generations of both African and Central American cichlids being bred in captivity the differences become negligible. I’m not so sure there are as many absolutes as we once thought. With some of the more generalized species sharing a similar morphology the possibility may not be as far fetched as it might seem. Having said this, the chances seem remote at best, just maybe not completely impossible. Not something I put any effort in trying, hitting the right combination of species isn’t going to happen overnight if a right combination even exists.

The more important question is why you would want to?

Maybe I am wrong here, and you are just thinking about putting CA cichlids in the same tank as Africans - but most people here (from what I have read) would agree it is better to keep CA and africans in separate tanks.

Actually thats exactly the case I have 3 parrots ATM and I saw the EY labs in a petshop here and they look amazing and i would like to add them to the tank and was wondering if it could happen, someone also pointed out to me that African are mouth brooders and CA are egg layers so even the breeding method is different. besides the genetic difference of course

If your talking about blood parrots they aren't even a ca cichlid. The may descend from them but they are a hybrid. Descendent from ca or sa cichlids but not of either group
