If you had Four Wild Caught female Trimacs… what would you cross them with to create interesting FlowHorns…

I’m considering searching for 4 very impressive Amphilophus’… then spawn the unrelated fry together… then spawn their unrelated fry together… any suggestions?

I think it would take too long...Why not keep a wild strain pure, and use some f-1's or lower to get some FH's?...I would say get some wild males....

I’ve been working on breeding Blue Dempseys for two years and still am not producing them… but I’m darn close! I like the idea of long term breeding projects. I’m not interested in making a business out of breeding, so things like this keep it interesting…

The Wild females I have will always be Wild… Also there are a few reputable breeders out there with Wild Caught pairs producing F-1 Pure Trimacs for sale, I’m not looking to compete with them… and when I do come across a wild caught male at a reasonable price I will pick it up and let him choose a female… but in the mean time why not cross her…

I haven’t done a lot of research yet as to what mixes make better FlowerHorns… and the research I have done hasn’t brought many answers… So that’s why I reached out here…

My thought was to pick four males of four different species that are all exceptionally red in color… Any suggestions?

This would leave me with 4 different “lines” of fish, all unrelated… then make two pairs from those lines leaving me with 2 pairs, unrelated… then spawn them together creating my third generation…

Naturally I would hand select which offspring to breed based on desired qualities…

yea but to do that I would want to do the same process but starting with 4 wild caught female Texas Cichlids... but I have Trimacs...

But if you know where I can get 4 wild caught female Texas... I'd be interested... lol

the time and effort for you to make yourself a decent FH from scratch, like you would be doing from "pure" x "pure", would take a very long time, and a ton of tanks. i'd say around 5-6 years before you get anything worth wile, to the standards of a good FH.

Nope… I was thinking something like:

Red Terror x Trimac…
Red Devil x Trimac…

Grow out the fry… select ones with desirable qualities… then breed the top fry from each spawn to the top from the other spawn…

Then do the same process with my other two females and two other species… then breed the final results of those fry with the final results of the above fry…

I know it will take a lot of time… but I’ve got time… and I know it will take a lot of tank (big tanks) but I have a lot of tanks… and space dedicated for more…

When I originally purchased the 4 Trimacs they were supposed to be 2 male and 2 female… I was going to keep the better looking pair and if the other two were also a pair I would trade them locally…

For the time being my focus is breeding stronger Blue Dempseys… But these don’t satisfy my lust for big aggressive fish… so I’m thinking of toying with Flowerhorns on the side…

So you guys don’t think that spawning a RT/Trimac cross with a RD/Trimac cross would produce any respectable looking offspring?

I’ve kept a lot of Cichlids… I have a lot of tanks… I’ve bred a good many species… but I’ve never played with hybridization… so I get to be a newbie again :D

this will take some time to grow potential possible selected mates, to be sure you get the best of the best.

honestly, no i do not think it will be anything to awesome looking. might turn out to be a cool fish, but not anything that will be worth much. but if your doing this for you own personal preference, then yes this would be a cool fish to have around.

Welcome to the world of hybridizing! Projects can go good for awhile, then turn out like complete crap...
