I can't decide between crush coral sand or crush coral. From the research I've done most of the people use the sand or aggrigate sand. I'm afraid that the sand might end up in my FX5 filter as the turtle flips it around. The crush coral that I've purchased today (and also have some left over) is the smallest grain before it's classified as sand. The sand is the #0 and this is the #1. Do you think it'll be too coarse for the little fella of 5"? Thanks in advance.

I would use regular play sand from homedepot. I have never had a problem with it in my canister filter for my mata mata. I also kept a softshell on this sand with a canister filter and never had any problems. it would be WAY better for your turtle since the crushed coral can really scratch up its shell...

Pool filter sand could be another option.

weird you say the coral could mess the turtles shell up. i notice my frts shell looking weird. like its peeling a lil. not much though. hardly noticed it. i was thinking it could be the coral cause this happend after i added it to the tank.

Coral sand shouldn't harm the turtle. FRT needs ph around 7.8-8.0
Are you sure it's not something else that leads to the peeling of the shell?

I"ve used crushed coral sand for years for my FRTs with no problems. It doesn't mess up my filters and I'm using 3x Ehiems for my tank.

Just make sure the filter inlet is not extended too close to the sand bed

The peeling could be due to your FRT growing. They do peel when they grow. However, if the peeling is extensive it could be fungal infection. Just keep the water clean and monitor
