I have a whack of broken terra cotta pots. Can anyone see any issues with crushing them down to smaller bits and using them as a bio-media? It seems simple enough.

How much is a whack?

Make sure they're fired properly or they will desolve and screw up the water chemistry.

Grind some up and put in hot water to see it it desolves.

You do know that scrubbies are over a hundred times better and take less labor :D .

I use pots all the time in my tanks, for breeding caves, probably wont do any harm.lots of other things would be better, easier and relativly cheap too

The surface area of the terracotta has so little beneficial surface area that you may as well have nothing in the filter. It's the junk we used "back in the day", along with toy soldiers and lava rock rubble, before better materials were found. Use scrubbie pads or pizza-sliced up floor stripper pads. At least they'll do a decent job without breaking the bank.

That was basically what I was going to say, which is basically what Oddball does to me everytime. LOL
