crushed coral as substrate

I am currently keeping africans and guppies which love hard alkaline water but if I later want to use for other fish like gouramis, tetras will I neccesarily need to change the substrate, are not most tropical fish acclimated to adjust to most water parameters, not needed for breeding just living?

I've only used it when I was keeping African Cichlids so not sure how it would help or harm lower ph/soft water fish.
