I am setting up an african cichlid tank for the first time, and I plan to mix crushed coral with gravel, but I was wondering, if I put too much coral, will it make the water too hard? How can I determine the right amount?
Do you know the GH, KH, and PH of your tapwater? These affect your waters buffering capability, and if these parameters are already good then there really isnt a need for crushed coral.
Also I dont think crushed coral can make the water "too hard." I run crushed coral in media bags in both of my HOB filters, a lot of people do it this way instead of using it as substrate.
