thanks for advice, what fish would these catfish get on with? or is it best just in a tank on its own?
You could always end up making an indoor pond...

I have a 13"-14" hemibagrus wyckii at the moment, it's very territorial and will carve out its own territory, so I don't think a mix with cichlids will work. The wyckii will either kill them, or the wyckii will die from stress because the cichlids that it can't catch will keep picking at it (cichlids can maneuver alot better in an aquarium). If you're going to try it make sure that you have a cave or large piece of driftwood that the wyckii can call home to maximize the chances of a successfull cohab.

I've kept several wykii successfully in community set ups - really it depends on what the fish has been used to up to now, and how big the tank is .

The last that I had was about 24" and lived in a 10x3x3 tank with a big pair of cichla, an ozzy gourami, a big redtail, a couple of snakeheads - wild oscars, two boulangerochromis - the only thing that the wykii battered was a large softshell turtle which I moved

give it a go

only thing is mate im worried about my arowana as he is only about 9" and my tank at the minute is only 18" wide by 7ft long by 2.5ft high, i will be upgrading but not until my patio doors are fitted in my house as my current tank only just about fit through the window.

Sounds like you're not completely sure..
With an evil tankbusting piscivore like this, you need to be utterly convinced you can look after it. I'm not an expert, I've never kept one, but after doing a quick google, I'd say decline the offer at this point.. if you want one then get a setup specifically for the fish.
Just my thoughts...
