I have read that the rocket gar requires "some" salt, same as the needlefish. I currently have a 4" Rocket Gar housed in entirely freshwater with a banded jailbird.

Petsmart had a clearance sale on the "needlenose gar" for $3. I could not resist and bought the slim 4-5" needlefish. I have it in a brackish QT. tank with a murderous 1.5" spotted green puffer.

Has anyone kept these fish together as tankmates? It seems like it would be "convienient" since they both share simmilar water as well as food requirements!

I have read both prefer to be in "groups" and I have only one of each, so I was not sure if they would potentially "school" together to keep the GSP in check!

I think it's not serious for salt. Please forgive me if Xenentodon cancila were sold in Thai. I'm so serious too much because some sellers didn't pay intention to customers just sold out.I love the fishes that live in surface just like Amazon needle fish or pink tail characins.

Hi,

I've never heard of keeping Ctenolucius hujeta in brackish water o_0 Have pair myself which are doing fine in pure freshwater for a year now.

The needle fish commonly found here in the US are amazonia based. And none of there last 2,00000 or so generations have seen salt water. Thats why they are commonly called SA needle fish.

They differ greatly from the salt/brackish version's found in the ocean and estuaries.

Since they are both from the amazon region they could handle a little salt. But not anything near true brackish 1.000+ or so salinity. Some people think brackish water is simply fresh water with 1TBS of aquarium/table salt added per 3-5g. And this is just not so.

Salt water salt mix is usually mixed in at 1/2 cup per gallon plus. Just for reference.

Please seperate 2 Fams. between Fam.Ctenoluciidae.(Ctenolucius hujetathat is found in S.America.) and Fam. Belonidae (Xenentodon cancila which is found in Asis ; freshwater and some can be found in esturary too ). Everytime use the salt after cleaning the tank in small quantities. I use Solar salt in my tanks after cleaning.
