Hey guys,

I finally tracked down Ctenopoma acutirostre (aka African Bush Fish, Spotted Leaf Fish, Leopard Gourami, Leopard Bush Fish, Leopard Ctenopoma) at a LFS in Queens. They had three little 1 1/2 inch babies and one of them was exceptionally vibrant so I had that one held for me last week.

This past Saturday I run over there in the morning and pick the little guy up, head home to my apt to get him ready for quarantine acclimation. I put him in his water in a large specimen container like the ones used by the LFS staff when preparing a bag for your chosen fish. About 15 min of floating on the inside of my quarantine tank to acclimate to the temperature I go ahead and pour a small amount of the quarentine tank water (This water was brand new I had just emptied the tank and refilled it with dechlorinated tap, since I am also currently soaking a log to release it's tannins) into the specimin tank holding my Ctenopoma.

30 min later the Ctenopoma is upside down completely dead pretty much in it's own water. I called the LFS and obviously he dodged the idea of a refund/replacement/store credit and I was real upset. I had finally hunted down this fish and it died within 45 min during acclimation!? What couldave went wrong???

He even tried to give me a line of bull like "The specimin container doesnt have holes it probably suffocated!" meanwhile Ctenopoma acutirostre has labyrinth organs and takes O2 from the surface. HAH!

if it is in a completely enclosed container, it could still suffocate, because no fresh air would be getting in . . . not saying that is what happened, but you cannot rule that out just because it is a labyrinth fish
