my 2.5'' ctenopoma has swallowed a baby cichlid that is a little big. the tail has been sticking out of his mouth for a few hours now, and he is starting to look a little distressed. should i just leave him be or should i try and remove it. i have to go to work in a half hour so i won't be able to do anyting till i get home, is he gonna be ok till i get back? has anyone had a similar experience

thanks,
Jordan

I'd at least try removing the part of the fish that's sticking out of the 'poma's mouth. If you have long thin scissors, a delicate hand, really good knowledge of where the gills are, and can get his mouth opened enough to do it, I'd suggest cutting the eaten fish up so he can swallow it or spit it out. But that can be really risky, so unless your fish is breathing heavily or looking really, really bad I'd save that as a last resort.

At least toss an airstone in there. What will kill him is suffocation.

tossed an air stone in before i left, still alive when i got back, mouth is still wide open but the other fishes tail is no longer sticking way out. i think i'm gonna let him work this one out on his own his condition seems to be improving
