They have bad attitudes, and grow to a manageable 8-10"...They are not unlike any other guapote and I think they prefer harder water than most sa/ca...Nandopsis tetracanthus.....

start out green when juvi but get kinda violet or purple tint as they grow

Not sure about sexing, but at 8-10 inches they would do great in a 55.

mine is now 7" male, he lives very peacefully in a community setting 180gal.

What would be recomended tank mates? Could another smaller cichlid join him in the 55 or no?

nope.

They can be pretty nasty.You could probably keep a couple convicts with one in a 55.It's hard to say if You could keep anything with Him for sure cause individuals vary.You can usually tell the sex by color pattern.
