my 8-9" needlenosed gar has a ton of scratches on his side it looks like my seven inch yellow tailed cuda repetaly struck and bit the needlenose wat should i do i think its becuase the gar because it is a skinny fish parts of his body could probably fit in the cudas mouth should i seperate him:(

my 7" yellowtail ate my 4" vatf, i suggest you separate them or keep the cuda well fed.

Usually this problem with cuda's and most other large characins has to do with feeding.

Are you keeping them supplied with live feeder fish?
Any fish that has a chance to eat something alive over something dead will take that chance.

If there never hungry then they never attack larger than food tank mates. IMO

My Red Tail absolutely HATES Arrowanas maybe because when I bought'm he was housed and harassed at the fish store by 16" Arrows. When I finally bought an Arrow several months later @6 " the Cuda rentlessly went after it. The Arrow was removed.
About a month and a half ago the same Cuda stripped the side off of one of my Chalceus deep enuff to get some white meat - figured he was a goner and the Cuda would slowly finish him off - Nope. Red tail healed up, Cuda leaves him alone at the present - poor Chalceus has a dent running down his side but it's almost 100% scaled over. I don't really think the aggression was over a meal, Cuda eats almost daily, I think it was just the nature of the beast. Crazy Characins.

I am assuming that you are referring to the Asian Needlefish, and not a longnose (true) gar. With that said, I was under the impression that the Needlefish while listed as freshwater requires the addition of salt into the water as they mature. Was this a pure freshwater tank setup? :WHOA: If so:

It is my understanding, that at that size, your needlefish overall health was probably slowly fading and the smaller Cuda took full advantage of the environmental disadvantage that the larger needlefish was faced with.

separate them. i have a red tail cuda which is slightly bigger than my scomb, and hujeta gar and vatf. i've stocked them together. the cuda hounds all of them. he will keep it up until the fish dies and he nibbles away til its nothing but bones left. im gonna wait til the cuda is the smaller of the stock.
