I just went down to the river (Mississippi) and picked up a few pieces of driftwood. Besides hosing them off, what do i need to do to be able to make it safe to put in the aquarium? I understand that some pieces need to be boiled, but the pieces i have are to big to fit in any regular sized pot. And i really didn't want to buy a crawfish pot just to boil some driftwood.

bleach it

Go buy a big ol' disposable foil baking pan...Boil it in the oven.

Bleach scares me. I just cure mine out in a big tank without fish to see if it's harboring anything. A boil would be nice, but I'd think at least dousing it with a few pans of boiling water, (flip, repeat) would be a pretty good compromise.

I think i may go with the dousing of boiling water. the pieces i got wont fit in my oven in my oven and i don't want to cut them as that will destroy their look.

I also get my wood from the Mississippi. I take it to an outdoor car wash. Do not use the detergent setting. Just put it on hot rinse and spray the heck out of it. A couple of bucks and your ready to go. One benifit is that if the wood is not solid, it won't survive.

Another method that may work, is if you just put it straight in the oven and bake it for a while? although don't know if it will make a mess of your oven...

Plus, you'll also need to re-soak it till its ready to sink afterwards, which could take a while depending on the wood...
